Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is the most widely used browser of the day. Actually, with version 7 finally adding tabbed browsing, I'm not convinced that sticking with IE is such a bad option these days. With a new version on the way, MS are certainly figting to retain their market share!

But it's not the only option - go and check out some other browsers!

Flock

Flock created quite a buzz when it was first released. Probably because there has been very little in the way of real innovation in the browser market for a long time! It managed to do this by jumping aboard the web 2.0 social media wagon.

Flock functionality allows you to track friends and updates through a range of social media services (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, Flickr, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, etc).

With 3 million downloads Flock is surely worth a look if you are a fan of social media.

Firefox

Firefox has the distinctive honour of being Internet Explorer's major competitor. At the time of writing, Firefox's usage share is approaching 20%. Still a long way to go before IE is toppled but we have come a long way from the days when there was only one browser in town.

Firefox is by no means the only competitor in the browser market but it should be on anyone's list to checkout:

Netscape Navigator

Anyone who grew up with the internet, yes, that's all of us over 30, will have fond memories of Navigator. It was likely the browser we first used to explore the wonders of the web! Although this list generally only features current updated browsers I couldn't deny this classic a space.

Navigator is, at the time of writing, still available for download, this final version was released Feb 2008 and is now unsupported.

Opera

Opera is a well polished browser produced by a Norwegian company. Perhaps unfairly overlooked it offers a range of internet functions including IRC, Bittorrent integration, email etc.

A major selling point has always been performance, and Opera is thought to have the quickest Javascript processing engine out there. If you are a net enabled Wii owner then you are already an Opera user!

Safari

If you are using a Mac then it is likely you are browsing with Safari - created by Apple Inc. But, the love was shared with Windows users in March 2008 and now Mac and PC users can be united. In web surfing at least!

As one might expect, the interface is instantly impressive and it's easy to understand why usage share is starting to rise. Well worth a look.

SeaMonkey

SeaMonkey is an all in one internet suite comprising Browser, Mail, News, IRC, etc. It has evolved from the Mozilla Application suite which in turn has roots in Netscape Communicator.

Comprehensive integration and performance have kept the SeaMonkey project in the loop.

Chrome

Google wondered to themselves what the result would be if they had a go at creating a browser from scratch! And the result was their brand shiney new Chrome.

Billed as being a slick, smooth, fast browser this is surely going to quickly grab a sizable market share. I've been using it for a few hours and am liking it already!
